It was New Year’s Eve. My husband and I planned on going out to dinner. Strike that, we didn’t have reservations, so I guess we didn’t plan that well. What happened next was fortuitous. While driving down Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank, we remembered Luna Vine a unique (for Burbank) cozy wine bar we had always meant to try.
Nestled between Magnolia Avenue’s cool vintage shops, a specialty spice store and “Pimp My Pooch” pet spa, is a sophisticated wine bar with the good fortune to have fabulous staff who are wine experts without any pretense. Behind the bar with a welcoming presence and wealth of knowledge is Steven a New York City born sommelier.
His journey from the Bronx (my favorite food mecca Arthur Avenue) to Saratoga Springs NY where he finished History and Asian studies degrees. He never imagined the path that would lead him to his “on the job” training and passion for wine. A random job in a Whole Foods wine department is where is absorbed everything he could about wine and caused him to study in his spare time (and taste of course) His exceptional customer service was recognized by a customer who happened to be manager at Le Pain Quotidien who encouraged him to come work there, where he gleaned more wine and food pairing knowledge. Every journey has twists and Steven’s was detoured from wine to cocktails at Death and Co a premier cocktail spot in NYC where he “worked the door” learned a ton about craft cocktails. Do you know about their famous Death and Cocktail book? Now he is living the LA lifestyle after a friend invited him to move to LA and just give it a try! What’s not to like, especially if you end up starting your LA life in the Arts District at The LA Brewery. An artists’ colony in an old brewery where a myriad of creative people take up residence. In true rite of passage into Los Angeles, Steven got a taste of the “industry” by assisting in music video production at the Brewery. The creativity continues on his blog “Wine with What” http://www.winewithwhat.com/” informative and fun.
Luna Vine opened it’s doors two years ago and has changed hands a few times. Silver Lake Liquor Shop now owns Luna bringing Steven to his place of expertise behind the bar. He is the reason we already been back twice and are planning to attend the new classes starting at Luna Vine next week. (January 19th) The first class will highlight sparkling wines. Classes will begin at 6:30 pm.
Oh no! I forgot to mention the food. So far we’ve tried the zucchini fritters, a creamy bacon laced macaroni and cheese served in a hot cast iron skillet, and simple bread and butter served with flavored butters. I hear the menu might be changing a bit, but everything we’ve tried so far was a delicious bite with the wine.
Burbank’s Magnolia Park area is always expanding with new and maintaining the old. Loads of vintage all along this charming yet hip block. Luna Vine Wine bar in smack in the middle of this unique shopping experience.
